Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS REFORMER PILATES?

Reformer Pilates is pilates done on a bed like apparatus which uses springs, pulleys, bars and straps to perform hundreds of exercises in a variety of positions to target very specific and stabilising muscle groups.

The Reformer machine uses spring resistance to build, tone and lengthen muscles and targets each individual muscle in isolation to give an all-over body workout. The exercises performed within the class change on a daily basis, placing the muscles under altering loads. Whilst the exercises are low in impact, they are extremely effective.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO REFORMER PILATES?

Whilst exercise is individual and will depend on your fitness level, lifestyle and commitments etc, unlike some other physical activities, Reformer Pilates can be done on a daily basis. It is gentle enough that it won’t tear muscles, yet challenging enough to keep you motivated. Having said that, we have a general recommendation of 3 classes a week. There are hundreds of movements and exercises on the Reformer so you will feel your workouts targeting your body from all different angles. Even if you can only come to Pilates once a week, it will assist in strengthening weakened areas and help promote strength, flexibility and balance.

WHO CAN DO REFORMER PILATES?

Pilates is for anybody and everybody’s body – and the Reformer doesn’t discriminate; its there to help us all.

From rehab clients that need the support of the springs to enhance their recovery, to desk workers that sit too much and pro athletes. Reformer Pilates is complementary to all lifestyles and abilities.

Think Pilates is for the ladies only? Our studio has a great balance of men and women, whether this be partners coming together, or the many male clients we have who practice Pilates on their own.

Nor is age a factor. Our youngest client is 14 and our oldest 86!

I HAVE AN INJURY. CAN I STILL DO PILATES?

Due to the low impact nature of the Reformer, it is a great way to start exercising following an injury, or to continue to exercise while injured, by modifying exercises around an injury. The focus on postural work and muscle imbalances during class will help your spinal alignment, keep muscles conditioned, and with continued practice will help decrease the risk of future injuries.

If you have an injury please ensure to contact the studio before booking into or attending a class so that we can ensure we can work with and around your injury and to make sure you’re not putting yourself at risk of further damage. Whilst we’re able to accommodate most injuries in our group classes, from time to time we may need to recommend you instead take one of our one-on-one or small group classes if we feel that your Instructor would not be able to give enough attention to all clients in the class if managing a specific injury and modifications, and we’ll be able to tell you up front if our group classes will not be suitable.

If you have an injury and have been approved by your GP and the studio to workout in one of our group classes, to ensure your Instructor has sufficient time to prepare a modified program around your injury please book your class as far ahead of time as possible, and please arrive 5 minutes prior to class so your Instructor has time to go over any modifications.

CAN I DO REFORMER PILATES IF I'M PREGNANT OR HAVE RECENTLY HAD A BABY?

 During Pregnancy

Our Instructors are specifically trained in pregnancy pilates. This allows us to take our pregnant clients in our regular Reformer classes right up to birth. We do not run pregnancy specific classes on our timetable because we find that each expectant mum has a different pregnancy journey which can affect what time of the day they want and are able to exercise, and by limiting the class times they could attend would also limit their ability to join a class and potentially miss the many benefits of pilates during pregnancy.

We do require our pregnant clients to advise us of their pregnancy before attending or booking a class. There are a number of modifications that need to be made at various stages of pregnancy (some as early as the first trimester), and we will need to discuss these with you before you attend your first class. This is to ensure the safety of both mum and bubs, and you can be assured we are very discreet as to any modifications required, particularly early on.

To ensure your Instructor has sufficient time to prepare a modified program around your stage of pregnancy please book your class as far ahead of time as possible, and please also arrive 10 minutes prior to each class so your Instructor has time to go over any modifications with you.

Please note that due to:

– the fast pace of our HIIT classes these classes are not suitable during pregnancy; and

– the hormone relaxin in your joints and ligaments, our Stretch classes are not suitable during pregnancy. We will guide you into safe pregnancy stretches in our regular Reformer classes.

Post Natal

You must wait until after you receive the all clear from your 6 week GP/Obstetrician check up before starting back at Pilates and before you attend your first class post pregnancy we will also need to receive Post Natal Exercise Clearance form signed by your GP or Obstetrician.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW FOR MY FIRST CLASS

What to wear: comfortable workout wear, keeping in mind that we do open our legs wide in some exercises.

What to bring: for safety and hygiene it is compulsory to have a towel and pair of socks for every class. We sell pilates grips socks in the studio which are safer than regular socks, but regular socks will also be fine. If you do not have a towel you can hire one for $2.

Arrival: please arrive 10 minutes before your first class so your Instructor can familiarise you with the studio and the Reformer machine. If you are late for your first class you may not be able to train as your Instructor cannot attend to other clients and go through your introduction at the same time.

IF I CAN'T MAKE MY SESSION CAN I GET A REFUND?

Unfortunately, no. In order to be fair to all clients we enforce a strict 12 hour cancellation policy for group classes. If you can’t make your class, it is your responsibility to cancel through your login (or let us know if you cannot access your login) at least 12 hours before the start time of your scheduled class or you will lose the class. We understand that life can sometimes get in the way, but we need to be strict and fair to all clients.

If you are on an Unlimited Classes Membership and you fail to cancel out of your classes 12 hours prior to your class time, a $10 late cancellation fee will be immediately and automatically deducted from your card or account.

Please note the cancellation policy for private and semi-private classes is 24 hours. This is because your Instructor plans these classes ahead of time around injuries and goals and requires sufficient time to personalise your class plan.

CAN I TRANSFER OR SHARE MY CLASSES?

Unfortunately no you cannot transfer or share your classes. The only exception we allow for this is to allow family members of the same household to share classes from a pack of classes (please note this does not apply to memberships but only class packs).

DO YOU HAVE SHOWER & TOILET FACILITIES?

Yes we have shared shower and toilet facilities onsite. Please ask a staff member for a key to access these facilities

IF YOUR PROGRAMS PLAY THROUGH SCREENS IN THE STUDIO, DO I STILL HAVE AN INSTRUCTOR?

Yes, absolutely! You will always have at least one Instructor in every class. The screens are used as an additional form of guidance which allows our Instructors more time to give you personalised attention with regards to technique, and modifications to make exercises harder or easier, or around injuries.

WHAT STEPS HAVE YOU TAKEN TO ENSURE HEALTH & SAFETY DURING COVID-19

The health and safety of our clients and staff has always been of paramount importance to us. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic we have implemented a thorough and strict COVID-19 Safe Protocol, which you can view here.

I'VE NEVER DONE REFORMER PILATES BEFORE. WHAT CLASS DO I START WITH?

You don’t need to have any former experience or particular fitness level to get started. We will go over the Reformer machine and the basics with you before you start your first class, then from there your Instructor will always know how many classes you’ve done and will be able to give you extra assistance and guidance as needed.

If you are brand new to Reformer pilates be sure to be patient with yourself. Every class will get easier in terms of your confidence in using the machine but we generally find that you find your groove around the 8 to 10 class mark.
